Off the Beaten Trail at Jemez Falls

Trail 137 begins again from Jemez Falls parking lot to Macauley Warm Springs. Hikers may continue on after the springs and hike all the way to Ship Rock. Cars parked at both ends make the hike a little shorter. The trail is rough and steep in places, and is much easier to go down then to climb up.

Off to the left of Trail 137, not far from the Jemez Falls trailhead heading towards Macauley Warm Springs is a magnificent view of a canyon not seen from Highway 4. The East Fork of the Jemez River runs through the canyon, tent rocks border the rim, and for this photo a majestic bird soars overhead.

Waiting for Spring

On one side of New Mexico Highway 4 the Aspens were in full bloom but when we hiked back into the forest a ways, we found this grove of Aspens still waiting for spring.

The Aspens in Bloom

The early morning sun illuminates the Aspen blossoms making the trees shimmer with a brilliant silver light against the clear blue New Mexico Sky. The sight takes one’s breath away. For several weeks now, I have tried to capture this illusive beauty with my camera. Alas, I have failed.

Here is what my camera did find.

First Day of Spring in the Jemez

Last week the weather was warm and wonderful. Beautiful New Mexico blue skies and melting snow. The ground under the snow pack is showing through in patches.

It snowed today, but warm weather is promised soon.

Surprise Spring Snow Storm

The temperatures Saturday evening dropped allowing the snow flakes that fell all day to start accumulating. We woke to about eight inches of snow and a chilly 24 degrees. Of course by this afternoon the new snow had melted, glad I captured these pictures this morning.

A Snowy Saturday in the Jemez Mountains

March 10, 2012

A wet snow covered the ground Friday and Saturday morning. In Ranchos de La Cueva the snow has turned to rain this morning at 8:00 a.m., and later back to a light continuously falling snow. Yesterday the roads were snow packed at the higher elevations above 7500 feet.

Friday the snow flocked the forest trees, each one visually stood out as an individual tree as far as the eye could see. Today the rain melted most of the snow from the branches. The trees merge into one forest with bright bunches of snow clinging to branches, creating spots of white contrasting against the merging evergreens. The brown branches seem to connect it all like veins and arteries.

Fire & Ice Festival in Jemez Springs

The skies were blue and wearing a jacket was optional on Saturday, a perfect day for a festival. Booths of handcrafted items, chain saw carvers, food and music combined to excite the senses.
